What is Aqueous Coating

24 Oct, 2022

Although an aqueous coating might not have a clear purpose initially, it's a big part of the packaging. I've got all the answers to your questions about this product and why it's so significant. Let us start with the definition.

What Does Aqueous Coating Mean?

Aqueous coating is water-based, environmentally friendly, and dries quickly when applied to printed materials. This coating is clear but can create a satin, soft-touch, or glossy finish. This liquid layer will resemble a film when applied to a packaging surface. It looks like a thin sheet lamination and is fully transparent. This layer protects against dull appearances.

The aqueous coating also ensures that nothing from the product will contact anything from the packaging. Contamination cannot occur as a result of this. It has been found that keeping your packaging boxes under that sort of coating will also keep them safe from scratches and other mechanical shocks etc. Let's see why it's so significant for your product packaging.

Aqueous Coatings: Why Use It?

When protecting our products, an aqueous coating is the most effective. Waterborne or solvent-based coatings are typically more difficult to apply than aqueous coatings. Users often prefer them since they are less expensive and more user-friendly. Start-ups and upcoming businesses just starting their careers in the industry can't afford an initial investment. Additionally, it will match perfectly with your custom packaging add-ons.

Aqueous Coatings: How do they work?

Aqueous coatings contain these essential ingredients: water, polymers, ammonium hydroxide, wetting representatives, wax, or a slip agent. The critical element is the polymer since when it dries, it forms a film, which adds protection to the job.

Paperboard can be coated with aqueous coatings, also called water-based coatings, to give it a glossy finish and smoother surface. There are many types of wet inks, and each can produce a different quality.

Aqueous coatings are commonly applied to cardboard boxes as they provide an effective barrier between them and external factors, such as moisture or light. A pigment-based ink can have a bright sheen, a semi-glossy sheen, or a matte sheen, depending on the amount of pigment added. Inks created with high pigment content have a longer shelf life than semi-gloss paints because they have less color depth.

How Does Aqueous Coatings Reduce Costs?

In addition to being transparent, aqueous coatings have the advantage of not affecting the color or transparency of your product. The lower surface tension of these products also prevents particles from clumping on the surfaces of your products. Additionally, aqueous coatings protect your products during the drying process before being processed further.

As a result, contaminants won't seep in once you start using chemicals on your product. Lowering the surface tension can also ensure that water and other contaminants cannot penetrate too far into your product if they get on it.

How to Choose the Best Aqueous Coating Products?

Aqueous coatings are not necessary for some products, but they will improve their appearance significantly. Consider aluminum foil, which cannot prevent anything from getting inside by itself. Food odors, grease stains, oil spills, and gas permeability are all eliminated with an aqueous coating.

Maintaining your product presentation on shelves and preventing dirt or accidents from getting into the product is made easier with transparent protective barriers. For these reasons, food packaging is best suited to that kind of coating.
